Her acting career began on stage in the mid-1980s. Her notable performances include parts in August Wilson’s plays Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (1984) and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at the Yale Repertory Theatre.

Her work also extends to film, including a role in the crime drama The Score (2001), a role as Rosa Parks in The Rosa Parks Story(2002) and an appearance on FX’s American Horror Story. She plays voodoo witch Marie Laveau on the series, receiving several nominations for her performance.

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Angela Evelyn Bassett was born to Betty Jane (nee Gilbert) and Daniel Benjamin Bassett. Her father was a social worker, and her mother was a civil servant.

After she was ten months old, her mother became pregnant with her sister, D’nette, which led to more hardships in their family. Her parents were unable to afford to keep D’nette at home, so they sent her to live with her father’s sister in Winston-Salem.

During her high school years, she attended Boca Ciega High School and was the first African-American from the school to be admitted into the National Honor Society. She also took part in Upward Bound, a college preparation program for disadvantaged students.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in African-American studies from Yale University. She then went on to earn an M.F.A. in drama from the same institution. She has since made a name for herself in the film industry as an actress and director. Her performances as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993) and Betty Shabazz inMalcolm X and Panther, among others, have earned her critical acclaim.

Bassett’s parents, social worker/civil servant Betty Jane Bessett and Daniel Benjamin Bassett, divorced when she was four. She and her sister Angela were raised by their mother in St. Petersburg, Florida, where they went to Boca Ciega High School.

The city is a popular tourist destination and is often called “Sunshine City.” It’s known for its beaches, golf courses and boating activities. It also hosts the Dali Museum, featuring surrealist works of art; and the Museum of Fine Arts.

Bassett has built her career around playing some of the most celebrated real life, pioneering black women of the twentieth century. She was Oscar-nominated for her role as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It, and won an NAACP Image Award for her portrayal of Betty Shabazz (widow of slain civil rights pioneer Malcolm X), in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X (1992).

She has also voiced several cartoon characters and played a role in the Disney Enchantment nighttime performance at Magic Kingdom.

During her acting career, Bassett has received a lot of awards and recognition for her work. She gained fame in the 1990s with her roles in Boyz n the Hood and Malcolm X.

She later went on to star in a number of biographical films, such as The Rosa Parks Story and What’s Love Got to Do With It. She was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
