Dane Rio Kapler

The son of San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler and his ex-wife, Lisa Jansen, Dane Rio is a rising athlete who is a star running back for the University of British Columbia. He also plays football for his high school team.

Despite Gabe and Lisa’s divorce, they had a strong bond with Dane and his brother Chase Ty. They raised him privately away from the limelight and he’s now grown up to be a great athlete.

Gabe Kapler grew up in Los Angeles, California. His father, Michael, is a classical pianist and music teacher and his mother, Judy, is an early childhood instructor. The couple met while working in the 1960s antiwar movement and migrated to California in the 1970s.

During high school, Kapler played shortstop and second base for William Howard Taft Charter High School. He graduated in 1993 at age 17.

In 1995 he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers. He was a 57th-round pick (#1,487th overall). In 1996, he led the Class A South Atlantic League in hits, doubles, extra-base hits and total bases, and was named a South Atlantic League All-Star. In 1997, he was a Florida State League mid-season and post-season All-Star.

He spent most of his MLB career as an outfielder. He played for six different teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 205 pounds.

A self-described travel enthusiast, he prefers to spend his days “getting lost” in new cities. He has been known to road-trip across the country, traveling by van.

Before he was hired as manager of the San Francisco Giants, Kapler was a director of player development for the Dodgers. He also worked with the Israeli national baseball team in 2012.

His first two years as manager in Philadelphia were rocky. He was the subject of a number of criticisms from MLB pundits, and his handling of sexual misconduct allegations with a Dodgers minor leaguer became a public matter.

Gabe and his family reside in Malibu, California. He is an angel investor in a startup coaching service called Coach Up, and also owns several real estate properties. He is a big fan of Miles Davis and John Lee Hooker, among other musicians.

At the age of eight, he was hit by a car and required counseling to overcome his fear of crossing streets. He was a star on many fitness magazines and became renowned for his K-Swiss shoe campaign before he even reached the pros.

After a successful career in baseball, he went on to manage major league teams. He coached the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018 and the San Francisco Giants in 2020. His Giants went 107-59 in his first year as manager, winning the NL West. In 2021, he was named the National League Manager of the Year.
