5 Reasons to Consider Switching to Fiber Internet

Many people believe fiber internet will dominate the world in the coming years. However, it still has a ways to go before it accomplishes this goal, as less than 45 percent of America’s population currently has access to this option. Hopefully, this will soon change. When fiber internet becomes available in an area, why should people switch?

Fast Speeds

Two factors determine the speed of internet service. Bandwidth dictates the amount of data transferred per second, and latency determines how fast the data arrives at its destination. By switching to fiber internet, a person can see improvements in both areas compared to their existing internet service.

Uploads and downloads on fiber networks occur at the same speed. Traditional networks, in contrast, have slower upload speeds than download speeds. Fiber networks have high bandwidth to accommodate multiple data streams simultaneously. Large files load rapidly, streams are smoother, and video calls continue uninterrupted. Thanks to the low latency, large volumes of data arrive promptly, so there are no lags or pixelation.

Reliable Connection

Fiber networks transmit data using light rather than the electricity used by copper and cable networks. Many things can interfere with copper networks and reduce signal strength. Outside interference does not affect fiber networks because they don’t carry electricity. The cables used in these networks resist moisture and aren’t affected by changes in the weather, so they are more reliable overall.

Data Security

Fiber networks improve data security. Unauthorized users cannot access the network and steal information because it uses light rather than electrical signals. Many fiber networks are software-defined, so no hardware is involved in data routing. This feature allows for private connections that don’t use the public internet. Entities that must transfer private data must do so securely, and the software-defined fiber network will enable them to do so. Healthcare and financial organizations are two types of entities that benefit from this increased level of security as they deal with sensitive client information that must be protected.

Increased Property Value

Many individuals are surprised to learn their property value increases when they move to fiber internet. The faster speed, increased reliability, and improved security can lead to a three percent property value increase. Many fiber internet providers don’t charge installation or equipment fees, either, so a person can switch with no upfront investment.

Better for the Planet

Humans use more energy today because they have become reliant on digital connectivity. Systems that rely on the internet consume a significant amount of power, and the Boston Consulting Group reported up to four percent of global CO2 emissions in 2021 were attributed to the information and communications technology sector.

The FTTH Council Global Alliance investigated the adoption of fiber networks and how this would impact CO2 emissions. It found that fiber-to-the-home networks could lower harmful emissions by 34 percent, a significant amount.

Fiber networks offer numerous benefits. They are more durable than conventional networks and operate more efficiently. Less power is needed to provide a strong signal, and speeds increase drastically. In addition, these networks rely on green materials rather than copper, which means oil extraction and mining activities decrease. With the help of fiber networks, internet connectivity become more energy-efficient, durable, and long-lasting.

Fiber networks offer many benefits, and industry insiders believe they will be the future of high-speed internet connections. Their use may lead to innovations, and economic, technological, and social growth will follow at rates that will astound many. Who knows what will come next?
