Your smile can often be your first impression when meeting someone new. It is important to keep that opening act happy and healthy. Dental health can often be overlooked in the day yo day hustle and bustle. To keep that smile looking good it is important to make the effort to stick to a basic cleaning routine.  We have all heard the basics but it is important to re-evaluate yourself and see where you stand on the status of your dental health.

It is important to keep your teeth happy and healthy so here are five tips for a healthy smile.

Don’t Forget to Brush and Floss

We hear it all the time, but it can be hard to stay consistent. Brushing and flossing twice a day is very important for our dental health. Following a proper brushing routine is a solid baseline for having good dental health. Without this, it is hard to stay accountable. Brushing twice a day helps remove food particles and helps clean out bacteria that grows in your mouth throughout the day. Once in the morning, and once at night, do whatever works for you to get this routine into your schedule. You want to make sure you are doing a thorough job and not just going through the motions. Make sure you hit all the sections of your mouth and are paying attention to your gums.

Keep Your Brush Fresh

So you have got the brushing twice a day down, goos start. The step a lot of people forget is to keep that toothbrush fresh and make sure to replace it when it starts to look damaged. With the bristles frayed and sad it will not be able to do the job it was meant to do. Replace your toothbrush when the bristles start getting bent and frayed, and if you have an electric toothbrush every three months is a good baseline.

I think it is also important to mention to use your own toothbrush. Using someone else’s toothbrush can introduce new bacteria into your mouth, which can cause more problems than just skipping that one session.

Stay Away From Sugar

Your sweet tooth can cause not-so-sweet problems for your smile. It will be beneficial for your dental and general health to stay away from sugary foods and drinks. Consuming mass amounts of sugar eats away at your teeth. One of the biggest culprits of this is soda. Soda is full of sugar and is very acidic. Simply swapping out soda for water would lead to a big decrease in both sugar and calories. Asking you to completely remove sugar from your diet is excessive, and everyone once in a while sugar is fine. Just try to take it easy.

Stay Hydrated

We all know you don’t drink enough water. Water is beneficial for your general health, and it also helps with your dental well-being. Not drinking water dries out your mouth, having a dry mouth can lead to more particles getting stuck to your teeth which can lead to tooth decay and cavity production. Staying hydrated allows you to produce more saliva making sure those particles are less likely to call your teeth home.

Don’t Be Scared of the Dentist

The Dentist is there to help you not hurt you. It is important to go to the dentist and get your cleaning done every six months. Not only will your smile be fresh, but you will have that time to get your teeth checked out. They will be able to fix current problems you are having with your dental health and they will also be able to spot and prevent new problem areas so you don’t have to. Dentists can also give you specific advice for your dental health situation. There are always general guidelines to follow to improve your dental health, but a dentist can tailor treatments to help if you have more severe problems.

Smile Away!

Having a healthy smile will not happen overnight. It takes time and it takes effort, but it is worth it in the end. It is in your hands to make the change and better your dental health. You will both look and feel better-having good and consistent oral hygiene habits. Your dentist will thank you.
