Keeping fit and active can be harder as we age. However, if you want to make a change in your life, there are a number of low-impact sports that can help you to improve not only your fitness but your health as well. One sport that is well worth considering in this aspect is golf. Golf can be played both solo or with a group of friends, and it’s unique in that your ability level doesn’t mean you can’t play with people that are more skilled than you. If you need more reasons to give golf a try, read on.
1. Get Outdoors!
Most of us have been cooped up inside over the last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With places finally starting to open up again, there has never been a better time to get outdoors for the day and enjoy some fresh air. Golf is one sport that enables you to do this while still practicing safe social distancing. Plus, spending time outside has many health benefits that most people aren’t aware of. It can help to lower your blood pressure and stress levels, boost creative thinking, and help you to sleep better.
2. It’s Great Exercise
The majority of people understand the importance of exercise, but let’s be honest, going to the gym just isn’t fun for most of us. If this sounds like you, golf can be a great alternative. Sports, in general, tend to be much more fun as they’re competitive and can be played with friends, all while providing the same health benefits as low impact exercises like walking. In fact, have you ever seen the size of an 18-par golf course? You could easily end up walking four miles or more during the course of one game, but instead of being bored staring at the same wall on a treadmill, you’ll be outdoors and chatting with your fellow golfers, golf club covers.
3. There Are No Age Limits
Did you know that professional golfer Tiger Woods started playing golf at the age of two? Okay, what about that the world’s oldest golfer is an impressive 103? Golf is one of those sports that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, making it a great sport to get into with your family and/or work colleagues. And, while we mentioned above that you can expect to walk around four miles during the course of a game, those struggling with mobility issues don’t have to miss out. Golf carts can be hired or purchased for the duration of your game and you can pretty much find any accessory you need online to make your game more comfortable too!
4. It’s Challenging
Every game of golf is different, which means that you can expect a new challenge every time you play. The people you play with will constantly be challenging and inspiring you to play better and improve your skills, and you’ll also be hoping to improve on your previous scores. The wide range of golf courses available also means that you’ll have different obstacles to overcome all the time. Yes, some of these can be frustrating, but they can also be incredibly rewarding when you complete them.
5. It Can Help Improve Your Mental Health
While many people are told to try yoga and meditation if they’re struggling with conditions like anxiety, golf offers many of the same benefits. For one, it’s a sport that promotes socializing, which can help to alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness. Secondly, as mentioned above, being outdoors can help to lower blood pressure, which in turn lowers stress levels. Finally, golf also encourages focus, which prevents the mind from focusing on unpleasant events and stressful thoughts. All of these make the sport ideal if you need to relax and unwind, and perhaps take a break from everyday life.
If you’ve never considered giving golf a try, hopefully, the above reasons have tempted you to give it a go.
